The Fur Coat (after Chris Culshaw)
Part 1.
Действие происходит в купе поезда. Ночь. В купе находятся 2 женщины. Одна лежит на нижней полке, укрывшись шубой. Другая укрылась пледом на противоположной полке.
1 speaker: This story happened to Mrs. Melrose. Once she was taking the night train from London to Glasgow. It was 3 o’clock in the morning.
2 speaker: Mrs. Melrose was trying to sleep but she couldn’t. The heater wasn’t working and it was very cold in the compartment.
Mrs. Melrose ворочается с боку на бок и шумно вздыхает.
1 speaker:Mrs. Melrose had a very expensive coat. She wrapped it around her and curled on the seat.
Mrs. Melrose встает, накидывает на себя шубу и вновь садится, свернувшись калачиком.
2 speaker: There was only one other woman in the compartment. She was sleeping. Suddenly she woke up.
2-nd woman: (приподнимая голову) What’s the time?
Mrs. Melrose: It’s only 3 a.m.
2-nd woman: Why aren’t you sleeping?
Mrs. Melrose: I’m trying but I can’t. I am cold.
2-nd woman: So am I.
Mrs. Melrose: Well, I can’t wait till morning. I’d better get a drink to make me warm.
Mrs. Melrose снимает свою шубу, кладет ее на сиденье затем берет со стола стакан и «выходит из купе».
Part 2.
1 speaker: While Mrs. Melrose was away the other woman quickly stood up and put on her fur coat.
2-nd woman (быстро поднимается с сиденья и надевает на себя шубу др. женщины)Oh! It’s so nice and warm. I like it very much.
2 speaker: Suddenly she heard somebody’s footsteps approaching.
2-nd woman (прислушивается к шагам, повернув голову и быстро садится на свое сиденье
Mrs. Melrose (заходит в купе, видит др. женщину в своей шубе и, делая глубокий вздох, сердито выкрикивает)What? (cо звуком ставит на стол стакан с чаем)It’s my fur coat.
2-nd woman: Yours?
Mrs. Melrose: Yes. It’s mine. (тянется к шубе)
2-ndwoman: No, it’s mine. (пятится назад)
Mrs. Melrose: How dare you? Give me my coat back , or I’ll call the guard.
2-ndwoman: (улыбаясь)As you like.
Mrs. Melrose: I’ll come back with a guard. (выходит из купе)
Part 3.
Mrs. Melrose (приходит с охраной, показывая рукой на др.женщину) That’s the woman who has just stolen my coat.
2-ndwoman: She is telling a lie.
Mrs. Melrose: You are a liar.
2-ndwoman: You don’t say so!
Guard: Stop! Stop shouting! I have no idea who is the real owner of the coat. When we get into Glasgow, I’d better take you both to the police. Do you understand me?
Mrs. Melrose: Yes.
Страж порядка уходит.
Part 4.
Входит страж порядка и объявляет Glasgow! Follow me to the Central Police Station. Both of you!
Обе женщины собирают свои сумки и идут за стражем порядка. Все уходят и тут же возвращаются обратно.
За столом сидит женщина-полицейский. На столе табличка«Police Station»
Policewoman: Come in! What’s the matter?
Guard: These 2 women are arguing non-stop about this fur coat. I don’t know who is the real owner of the coat. Sorry. I have to leave. Good-bye.
Policewoman: Bye. (Обращаясь ко 2-й женщине) Give me the coat, please.
2-nd woman (снимает шубу и передает ее женщине-полицейскому) Here you are.
Mrs. Melrose: It’s my coat. Look inside and you’ll see my name and my address on the label.
Policewoman: (ищет метку на подкладке шубы)I can’t find any label. Well, I must take this coat away and examine it.
Mrs. Melrose: What’s wrong with it?
Policewoman: Don’t worry. I’ll be quick.
Mrs. Melrose : (вздыхает) What shall I do?
Part 5.
Policewoman: (возвращается с шубой обратно) I’m afraid, the owner of this coat is in very serious trouble.
Mrs. Melrose: What?
Policewoman: When I was examining the coat I found this.
(из кармана шубы достает маленький пакет с белым порошком)
It’ s a very serious drug.
2-ndwoman: Drug?
Policewoman: Yes. The owner of this coat may go to prison for a long time.
2-ndwoman: Oh! Well. Perhaps I was wrong. It isn’t my coat. I’m leaving you. Good-bye.
Mrs. Melrose:(виновато) It/s my fur coat. But I don’t know anything about the drug.
Policewoman: Don’t worry. Please, take it. I’m sure you are the real owner of the coat. I didn’t find anything inside. This is a packet of salt. I borrowed it from the canteen.
